Russia Foreign Ministry calls for prosecuting Israelis responsible for Church of Gethsemane attack – Middle East Monitor

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called for those responsible for the attack on the Church of Gethsemane in occupied Jerusalem to be tried.

On Friday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova shared an official statement: “We are convinced that there is no justification, and that such criminal acts can never be justified, and we hope that the Israeli authorities will unequivocal assessment available. what happened and take comprehensive measures to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent the recurrence of such attacks in the future.”

Zakharova expressed Moscow’s “deep concern” about such offensive behavior, noting: “The number of anti-Christian incidents has increased significantly recently, as churches, cemeteries of various Christian denominations, clergy and monks are the targets of these attacks.”

On March 19, two settlers stormed the church and tried to destroy its contents, physically harming members of the clergy and intimidating visitors and pilgrims.

This is the fifth such attack against Christian places of worship in Jerusalem occupied by Jewish extremists since the beginning of the year. Previously, the settlers stormed the Church of the Flag in the Old City of Jerusalem, broke and destroyed some of its contents, and tried to set it on fire. The cemetery of the Episcopal Church was also attacked, as well as attempts to break into the Armenian Patriarchate, and racist phrases were written on its walls.
