The European Union expressed deep regret on Monday because of the statements made by Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich during a Jewish community event in France. Echoing the words of former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir, far-right extremist Smotrich claimed that “there is no such thing as the Palestinians” and that “they are fake nations created only to fight the movement Zionist.”

According to the EU office in Jerusalem, Smotrich’s remarks were “wrong, disrespectful, dangerous and counterproductive in an already dire situation.” Speaking to Wafathe EU statement insisted that such statements “cannot be tolerated.”

The EU called on the Israeli government to disassociate itself from such statements and work with all parties involved to ease tensions.

Meanwhile, the EU expressed its deep concern about the increasing violence in the occupied Palestinian land, calling for necessary measures to be taken to reduce the escalation. The Union continues to support the discredited two-state “solution”. They said he remains committed to the creation of an independent and sovereign Palestinian State that lives side by side in peace and security with Israel.
