US ‘opposes’ Turkiye’s normalisation of ties with Syria regime – Middle East Monitor
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that the United States is against Ankara’s plans to normalize relations with Syria, noting that Washington has not officially communicated this to Turkiye.
“The United States did not tell us specifically why you are meeting with the Syrian side in trilateral meetings with Russia, but we understand and know that the United States is against the normalization of our relations with the Syrian side, ” Cavusoglu told reporters in Ankara, adding. : “Turkey will not normalize relations with the regime of Bashar Al-Assad, against the will of the Syrian opposition.”
The Turkish minister said that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan could have a meeting with the President of the Syrian regime, Bashar Al-Assad, saying: “Let us, the ministers, meet and assess the situation, and then we assessment of this meeting.”
“Our various institutions have had meetings with the Syrian opposition, and I will personally meet with representatives of the opposition on Tuesday,” he said.
Last Wednesday the defense ministers of Turkey, Syria and Russia met in Moscow for the first time since the start of the war in Syria in 2011.
